Countryside Church of Christ

Nondenominational Bible-Teaching Fellowship in Hesperia, Michigan

Pastor Cotton's Bio

Dick Cotton became pastor of Countryside Church of Christ on September 27, 2015. About his new appointment, he says, “I am excited about serving with the people of Countryside Church as we seek to grow in our own relationship with Jesus and reach out to others who want to know the truth about life and death and Jesus as revealed in the Bible.”

Having ministered in Hesperia for eight of the past fifteen years, Cotton believes, “God is at work in Hesperia. He is moving in the lives of everyone open to His touch, not just one church. There is a sense of revival growing, not a flash in the pan, but a deep and maturing expectation, prayerful and leading to repentance and renewed faith.”

Dick grew up roping steers, playing linebacker and conducting science experiments in rural Grant, Michigan. On his way to becoming a Chemical Engineer at Michigan Tech, he met and married Christy Bowerman of Kalkaska. During those years, they both sensed God calling Dick to ministry of the Word of God and prayer (Acts 6:4).

So after earning bachelor’s degrees at Tech, Dick and Christy moved to Dallas, Texas, where Dick completed the four-year Master of Theology at Dallas Theological Seminary. The Cottons returned to Houghton in 1986 where Dick served as Associate Pastor of Evangel Baptist Church. In 1989, he was ordained, then Dick and Christy were commissioned to serve as frontier mission mobilizers at the U.S. Center for World Mission in Pasadena, California.

At the USCWM (now called Frontier Ventures), Dick worked as Publications Manager and Managing Editor for the Global Prayer Digest. On temporary assignment to Dallas, Texas, Dick taught and assisted in the World Missions Department at Dallas Seminary, and represented the USCWM regionally. He returned to Pasadena to serve as Assistant Director of the USCWM.

A return to local church ministry took the Cottons to North Dakota and then home to Michigan. Dick served two stints as pastor of the Hesperia Presbyterian Church, from 2001-2003 and again from 2010-2015. In between, he completed the coursework for a doctorate at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, taught Bible for two years at Northpointe Christian Schools, and taught several courses in Cornerstone University’s Professional & Graduate Studies program.

Dick and Christy have three grown children: Änna, John and Michaela. The couple live in Grand Rapids where Christy is the financial aid counselor for Michigan State University’s Medical School.

Dick shares from the heart, “I love teaching and preaching the Word of God. Without the Word of God, God’s revelation of Himself, all we would have is everyone’s opinions about right and wrong, life and death. When you actually read and study the Bible, you find out how accurate and meaningful it is. Don’t build your life on someone else’s opinion about the Bible. Find out for yourself. Take the time to sit down and read what it says.”
